The CFA® designation is one of the most prestigious accreditations that financial planning professionals can earn. To earn the CFA® designation requires at least four years of investment-related work experience, adherence to the CFA Code of Ethics, and mastery of investment analysis and portfolio management by passing a series of rigorous exams.
Chad Burton is the co-founder and CEO of NewFocus Financial Group. He serves as the chairman of the investment committee and is actively involved in the investment process.
Two decades ago, Chad was introduced to the investment world by his grandfather. As a result of their partnership, he gained valuable tools and experiences early in his career by focusing on issues specific to wealth management such as income distribution and estate planning strategies. That set the foundation for establishing a successful wealth management and financial planning firm.
As a leading wealth advisor and dynamic public speaker, Chad began making radio and TV appearances in 1999 with Rob Black and eventually started hosting his own radio show in 2002. Every year, he speaks to thousands of people at investment conferences and seminars. Podcasts of Chad’s radio shows can be found in the podcast section of the iTunes store.
Rob Black is the co-founder of NewFocus Financial Group.
Rob has had a lengthy and successful career as a money manager and financial media expert. In 1993, he founded Mercury Capital Management, where he served as owner and lead advisor. Rob and Chad Burton, CFP®, merged their firms and created NewFocus Financial Group. Rob relocated to California in 2002, where he focused on creating financial media that clicks with all types of investors.
Dan Koerner, an Investment Analyst with NewFocus Financial Group, has more than 15 years of experience in the wealth management industry, with a background in working with high-net-worth clients and institutions in security analysis and research, asset allocation, portfolio management and financial planning. Prior to joining NewFocus Financial Group, he worked at the Guardian, Robert W. Baird and, most recently, William Blair & Co. in Chicago.
Dan earned a B.A. in business from the University of Northern Iowa and an MBA degree from Arizona State University. He became a CFA® charterholder in 2002, has earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago. A resident of Portland, his hobbies include hiking, kayaking, traveling and playing guitar.
Mark Farrelly, a Lead Advisor with NewFocus Financial Group, has more than 10 years of experience in the wealth management industry. Prior to joining the firm, he served as Vice President Senior Account Executive in the Private Client Group at Fidelity Investments in Palo Alto, Calif. There, he worked with affluent private investors and focused on financial planning, asset management and retirement strategies.
Mark graduated magna cum laude from Bryant University with a B.S. in business administration. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and is a member of the Financial Planning Association of San Francisco.
A resident of Mountain View, Calif., Mark enjoys golf, weight lifting, running, traveling and hiking.
Brad Stacey joined NewFocus Financial Group in 2008 as a Financial Advisor. Bad experiences with stockbrokers and a commitment to doing what is right for clients led him to a career as an advisor. Today, he especially enjoys working with people to attain their financial goals, and finds it particularly satisfying when he helps them realize that their dreams are within reach. Currently, Brad works with high-net-worth clients in financial planning, cash flow management and retirement strategies.
A native of the Pacific Northwest, Brad earned his B.A. from the University of Oregon and a certificate in financial planning from the University of Portland. He also holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional certification and is a member of the Financial Planning Association.
Brad and his wife Lois live in Portland. His hobbies include golf and cheering on the Oregon Ducks football team.
As an advisor, Ryan provides comprehensive financial planning and investment management to help clients reach their goals and enjoy the life they envision. With 16 years in the industry, he thrives on drawing on his expertise to educate clients about their financial choices and seeing firsthand the positive impact he can have on their lives.
Ryan studied biochemistry at UC Davis, but an interest in the financial markets in his junior year ignited his passion for personal finance and investing. His experience since then has included stints at Mellon Capital (BNY Mellon), where he managed complex portfolios for institutional clients, and Galileo Planning Group, where he helped meet the planning and investment needs of high-net-worth individuals. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.
Ryan was born and raised in San Francisco, and he remembers when there was no traffic in the Bay Area. Today he and his growing family call San Mateo home, enjoying day trips to local wineries and annual vacations to Maui.
As an associate advisor, Dan helps assess the financial health of clients and then creates a detailed plan of action so clients can have the confidence and motivation to reach their financial goals. With 17 years in the financial services industry, Dan has seen the value of education in helping people avoid costly mistakes and take control of their financial decision-making. He thrives in serving as a collaborative consultant to clients, helping them realize their goals and live the lives they envision.
Dan received a B.S. in international business from the University of Maryland, College Park, and has an executive certificate in financial planning from the University of Georgetown. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner and investment advisor, he draws on his education and experience, as well as his good listening skills, to turn seemingly chaotic personal finances into well-organized plans that make sense to clients.
Dan lives in Tiburon with his wife and son. A member of a barbershop quartet in a high school production, today he shares his enjoyment of music by learning violin with his son.
As an associate advisor, Jaron works with clients to build comprehensive financial plans that help provide the confidence and direction for a successful retirement. As a college instructor and business owner, he understands the specifics of state pensions and the challenges of owning a business and thrives in helping educators and entrepreneurs alike apply strategies that will better prepare them for retirement.
Jaron started his career in retail but soon realized that he had a passion for finance. He enrolled in Washington State University, where he graduated with an MBA in business administration and finance. Today he is pursuing the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, with an expected completion date of March 2017. He especially enjoys his work as an associate advisor because it merges his financial expertise with his passion for helping people.
A resident of Battle Ground, Washington, Jaron and his wife, Wendy, are busy raising six daughters. He also stays active volunteering for a variety of organizations, including as a coach for youth soccer.
Cherie brings over a decade of experience in the financial services industry. As the firm’s operations and compliance manager, she is responsible for developing, initiating, and maintaining policies and procedures. She also oversees and manages compliance issues, conducts periodic internal reviews or audits, and improves operational systems and processes.
Cherie began her finance career in 2000 with Merrill Lynch’s Wealth Management Division in Ontario, Calif. Prior to joining NewFocus Financial, she held a Fund Administration position at LoringWard where she focused on compliance, budget, and operations for an investment trust with over $3 billion in assets. She holds a B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in management from Pacific Union College.
Cherie and her husband Craig live with their children, Josiah and Myla, in Hillsboro. She enjoys swimming, hiking, and visiting her favorite travel destinations: Greece, Paris and Hawaii.
Kathleen M. Cheek is a Client Service Specialist with NewFocus Financial Group. With more than 15 years of experience in the wealth management industry, she currently acts as the primary liaison between clients, custodians and internal staff. In addition, she manages all aspects of client service to ensure that all requests are completed accurately and on time. She loves helping clients navigate the fast-paced and constantly changing financial world and enjoys helping them solve their problems quickly and efficiently.
Kathleen got her start in the financial industry with Dean Witter in 1992 doing cold calls while she was still in high school. She moved to the operations side of the business after graduation before taking a break to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She returned to finance in 2004 when she took on an operations manager role with Morgan Stanley. Ultimately, she realized she was best able to use her skills by serving clients directly, which led to her current career in client service. Prior to joining NewFocus Financial Group, she was part of a team that worked with very high-net-worth individuals.
Kathleen grew up in Southern California riding dirt bikes and moved to Portland in 2011. In her free time she likes camping on the beach, painting, making candles, reading, cooking and enjoying live music and concerts with her husband, Jon.
Brie Valant has over a decade of experience in the financial services industry. As a Client Service Specialist, she provides client service and operations support at NewFocus Financial Group. Brie serves as the primary liaison among our clients, the custodians of client assets and internal staff. She is responsible for managing account activity, including account establishment, and is involved in all aspects of client servicing.
Brie began her finance career in 2003 with Heritage Capital Management, LLC, in Boston. After moving west, she continued her career with firms including Bandon Capital Management, a wealth management firm in Portland, Oregon, assisting the President with projects including operations, compliance and relationship management.
Brie lives with her daughter in Vancouver and enjoys biking, artistic endeavors and traveling to the East Coast, where she spends time with her close-knit family.
Mikki has 30 years of experience in financial services, office management and accounting. Prior to joining NewFocus Financial, she worked at Wells Fargo Financial where she served in the billing and operations department. Mikki began her banking career at Far West Federal Bank, where she was promoted and given the responsibility to oversee the administration and efficient daily operation of the full-service branch.
